About Us

At this point Bikememphis.com is just one person, Cliff Heegel.

Hopefully more people will get involved in Bikememphis as certified instructors.

There are a lot of people in Memphis who are working on making things better for bicyclists in many different ways. Check out the Links page for that information.

Cliff Heegel's Bike Bio:

I fell in love with biking as an adult when I was an active duty member of the US Army stationed in Augsburg, Germany. Germany was a good place to learn to ride in traffic-- there were many adults who rode bikes everywhere. The transportation system was designed to accommodate bikes and mopeds in addition to cars. The German drivers were used to sharing the road with bicycles and the police were good about enforcing traffic rules for bicyclists.

While I was living in Germany I  developed the habit of commuting to work by bike. Since then I have endeavored to ride wherever I have lived and worked. I had a few years where I was car dependent, but I hope those years are over. I transferred the title of 'my' car to my daughter in 2001 and I haven't owned one since. However, my wife Carol owns a car, and we use it, so I would have to describe my lifestyle as 'car-lite' instead of 'car-free'. I don't hate cars but I don't think petroleum-based personal transportation is a sustainable solution for humans.

Now I routinely bike to work-- it is a rare day when I borrow my wife's car. I also shop and run errands on bike. I have two trailers that I use for hauling things that are too big to put into my panniers (saddle bags).
